Thom Vander Beken (1977) is a Belgian director working and living in Brussels. After becoming a Master in Dutch and English literature at Ghent University, he went on to obtain a Masters degree in directing from St-Lukas film school in Brussels. His first film "Ik droomde ons" (2002) was an intimate portrait of a complicated mother-and-son relationship. The film won the student’s award at the Viewpoint film festival. His graduation film "Alice" (2004) was screened on several (inter)national documentary film festivals, was awarded with a special prize at the COURTizane festival in Ghent, Belgium. The film investigated the boundaries between fiction and reality in a psychiatric hospital just outside Ghent. His latest film, "Lost in Transition", the story of youths in modern-day Serbia, traveled to several international festivals and was Thom’s first production together with Savage Film.
Besides cinema, Thom also works in theatre and was assistant to the director for several opera productions in Belgium and abroad. He also writes about art for several websites.
