Tonight
the Beursschouwburg hosts the world première of Bram Van Paesschen's
long awaited new feature documentary EMPIRE OF DUST !
Two men representing two different cultures clash in the dust of the former Belgian colony; the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Loa
Yang and Eddy both work for a company called CREC (Chinese Railway
Engineering Company). They have just set up camp near the remote mining
town of Kolwezi in the Katanga province of DR Congo. The goal of the
company is to re-lay the road - covering 300km- that connects Kolwezi
with the capital of the province Lubumbashi.
Loa
Yang is head of logistics for the group. He's responsible for ensuring
the necessary equipment, building materials and food (mainly chickens)
arrive in the isolated Chinese prefab camp. The Congolese government is
supposed to deliver these things, but so far the team hasn't received
anything.
With
Eddy, a Congolese man who speaks fluent Mandarin, as an intermediary,
Lau Yang has no option but to leave the camp and head out to deal with
local Congolese entrepreneurs. Without the building materials the work
on the road will come to a standstill. The result is an endless, harsh
but absurdly funny roller coaster of negotiations and misunderstandings,
as Lao Yang learns about the Congolese ways.
The first film of Bram Van Paesschen about this region, 'Pale Peko Bantu' was selected for IDFA 2008.
With
the support of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund, the Belgian Ministry of
Development Aid (DGD) and the EU MEDIA Programme. In association with
Eyeworks. With the participation of RTBF & Beursschouwburg, and
co-financed through the Belgian tax-shelter for film financing.
Premiere June 9th 2011 at Beursschouwburg, Brussels.
Academy
Award nominated director Mike Figgis will attend the 10th annual Dance
Camera West Dance Media Film Festival June 16-19 in Los Angeles, which
features the American premiere of his award-winning THE CO(TE)LETTE FILM.
A
pre-screening director's talk with Mr. Figgis on Saturday, June 18,
will explore the cinematic adaptation of the dance performance by
choreographer Ann Van den Broek.
