Marnix Ruben

Born and raised in Terneuzen, the Netherlands (1986) and living in Ghent, Belgium, Marnix was trained as a filmmaker at the Luca school of arts in Brussels, where he graduated as a Master of Arts in 2013. His bachelor thesis was also his first fiction short, "Only Flesh", that screened at several festivals including the international Film Festival in Ghent. Next he directs "Quarterlife" (Jury price for best film in Zeeland, Film by the Sea, NL 2013) a documentary for which he followed his best friends for over six months. While editing "Quarterlife" he also filmed internationally acclaimed elektro band Goose on an international tour for 8 months.var/media/gallery/0/06ab7902f6c2aded76d8588e8da3ddf8.jpg

His most recent work is an adaptation of the short story "De Overkant (Across)" by game changing Dutch comedian Freek de Jonge. This short film is set in 1964 in Marnix birthplace, Terneuzen. The film premiered at Film by the Sea in 2015 and won the Jury Prize for Best Film Premiere. After that, "Across" got the 2nd place in the Audience Awards of the European competition at the International Short FilmFestival in Leuven. Then it won ‘Best professional narrative short' prize at the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (USA) and it was also awarded with Best Script prize at the Beliff London Film Festival.

The success of "Across" led Marnix to write and direct his first feature length film "Checkpoint".
The film will be an epic true crime drama about Meddie, a humble Dutch bar owner, who opens a coffee shop (hasj bar) with permission of local government. Quickly, the bar grows to be the biggest softdrugs-supermarket in the world. While he does everything he can to stay away from criminal interference and to comply to the shady Dutch cannabis tolerance policy, the district attorney hunts him down under the accusation that he'd be the leader of a big scale crime organization.

Besides the filmmaking activity, Marnix also teaches film directing at the Luca School of Arts in Brussels since 2016, to spread his passion and enhance his own craftmanship.
